Vince Lombardi　Brief personal history

In Brooklyn, New York, Vincent Thomas Lombardi was born to Italian immigrant parents on June 11, 1913. He was the oldest of five children in his family.

Lombardi was raised in an Italian American neighborhood in Brooklyn and attended St. Mark’s Catholic high school.
In 1933, Lombardi attended Fordham University, where he played football as a guard on the varsity team.

After graduating from Fordham in 1937, he played semi-professional football for a year before turning to coach.
Lombardi’s first coaching job was as an assistant coach at St. Cecilia High School in Englewood, New Jersey.
He then spent two years as an assistant coach at Fordham before serving in the Army during World War II.

After the war, Lombardi returned to Fordham as an assistant coach and became an assistant coach at West Point. In 1954, he was hired as an offensive coordinator for the New York Giants.

In 1959, Vince Lombardi was hired as the head coach of the Green Bay Packers.
Over the next nine years, he led the Packers to five NFL championships and victories in the first two Super Bowls.
Lombardi was known for being a strict and demanding coach who stressed hard work, paying attention to details, and a desire to win.
In 1968, Lombardi left the Packers to become the head coach of the Washington Redskins.
He led the team to its first winning season in 14 years, but he was diagnosed with colon cancer during the season.

Lombardi underwent surgery in the summer of 1970, but cancer had already spread to his liver. He died on September 3, 1970, at the age of 57.

Many people think that Lombardi was one of the best football coaches ever, and his name has come to mean excellence and success.
